A sleepy man named Keith is already residing in the small house when documentarian researcher Tess—an exceptional Georgina Campbell—arrives there late at night in the pouring rain from a remote area of Detroit. He eventually persuades her to stay until they can resolve this by offering to take the couch, allowing her to see his proof of reservation, and allowing him to observe her opening the bottle of wine that someone else left before he started pouring.
The Whitest Kids U' Know sketch group member Cregger is the writer of the Playboy magazine frat comedy "Miss March," and he is completely aware of the material he is using. His economical filmmaking nudges the uncomfortable optics of this woman exposing herself to a certain level of vulnerability. There won't be any major spoilers here, although you probably wouldn't want to proceed past the door that can be opened with a strand of rope or down into the basement. In spite of the purposeful stupidity, "Barbarian" nonetheless has plenty of visceral mysteries and revelations.
Did I mention that Bill Skarsgard, who portrayed the other Airbnb guy in "It," plays him? Consider Skarsgrd's presence, one of the movie's disquieting elements, which is just as unsettling as the house's countless secret, dark hallways, as another piece of evidence that casting is an essential component of filmmaking. Here, the erstwhile Pennywise the Clown employs his unassuming demeanor, round eyes, and intimidating frame in place of a nervous ramble in an attempt to convey his concern for Tess' safety in this odd circumstance. Is it only a disarmament move? Does Skarsgrd have a new role as a seducing creep? This question gives "Barbarian" some energy, and it is answered in one of the best scenes.

The movie has an engrossing knack for knowing when to abruptly cut and toss us from one terrifying scene to another time zone or decade, allowing the viewer to breathe while paying close attention to how the current life story will fit in. Incorporating these fresh components with ambition results in vignettes made of the varied aspect ratios and in-depth shots of cinematographer Zach Kuperstein, which add to the film's oppressive atmosphere.
In the same way that the wailing choir and screeching strings from Anna Drubich's score resound throughout, the word "Barbarian" conjures up a figurative house of mirrors that is unsettling. It's almost enough to detract from the fact that "Barbarian's" first two acts fall short of the tight wit that would elevate them to the level of a great horror script. When Cregger relies on convenient choices of any kind, the movie suffers. The descent from "Barbarian" can be obvious as it eventually just wants to be as bananas as possible.
